The hunters and the witches remained in a standoff over Brenna’s body for several minutes, at least until Madame Grey materialised from somewhere nearby. She spoke to the hunters in a low voice, but my relief at the sight of her was tempered by my certainty that even she hadn’t seen this coming. Whatever she said to them brought an end to their argument with the witches, and Linda ordered a couple of hunters to move Brenna’s body into the house. Meanwhile, the witches moved back to the main part of the garden, in front of the house.

“From now on, there won’t be any wandering off alone,” Linda Graham told everyone. “You’ll all stay within sight of the house.”

What now? It had briefly occurred to me that the hunters’ distraction might give Rebecca an opportunity to properly search for Toast, but it wouldn’t be wise for either of us to wander off alone.

Rebecca shuffled in behind me, one eye on Madame Grey. “We need to tell her about Toast. I know it’s bad timing, but the hunters are never going to let us search the house now, and he might be in trouble.”

Blythe appeared at her sister’s back, and I caught Madame Grey’s gaze at least three times before she left the hunters behind and made her way over to the three of us.

“Madame Grey,” I whispered. “We need to talk to you alone. It’s urgent.”

“Whatever it is, I’m sure it can wait,” she said brusquely. “Unless it’s connected to Brenna’s unfortunate death.”

“No. Well, possibly,” I amended. “Rebecca’s familiar is missing, and now we’re not allowed to go off alone, we can’t find him.”

“Have you already searched the house?”

“Most of the downstairs floor,” replied Blythe. “Except the parts the hunters have taken over.”

“He wasn’t in the questioning room,” said Rebecca. “I doubt he’s in the meeting room, either, but there are other rooms. The house keeps changing.”

“Yes, Arabella claims she can’t turn off the spell on her house despite the urgency of the situation.” Madame Grey pursed her lips. “The garden too. I have little doubt the killer would have found it harder to remain hidden if the hedges didn’t move around.”

So I hadn’t imagined the place being a literal maze. “Yeah… the last time I saw her alive was when she was searching the bushes at the scene of Coral’s death.”

Maybe she’d figured something out after all, but I had no way of knowing now she was dead. I hadn’t liked Brenna much, but I hadn’t really suspected her of murdering Coral either. Now it was too late to ask her any questions.

“You don’t think she figured out who killed Coral, do you?” asked Rebecca.

“Did she?” Madame Grey’s gaze sharpened. “If she did, it explains why she was targeted herself.”

“If she did, she didn’t tell me any of her suspicions.” I lowered my gaze. “Nobody here is willing to talk. Not to me, at any rate.”

And now that I’d discovered Brenna’s body, I doubted any of the witches would change their minds in a hurry.
